The effects of the climate crisis appear in many facets of our lives including our worsening air quality, rise in global temperatures and sea levels, and natural disasters such as wildfires, droughts, and floods. It can feel daunting to try to make a difference, but we can all take small steps to make an impact and mitigate these effects, even if it’s not ‘your’ home. We’ve all grown up hearing and reading about “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, but what does it mean in practice? If you’re interested in making a difference but don’t know where to start, there are a handful of ways to “greenify” your apartment and/or dorm
Every year Unite to Light makes a plan that includes providing our solar Luke Lights and Chandler Chargers to people experiencing disasters. We depend on your help and generosity to fund these response and recovery efforts. And while we have several long time partners (like Direct Relief) we can count on to help with distribution, we never quite know where those disasters will strike or how big the “give” will be.
2021 proved to be another tumultuous year with fires, floods, freezes, hurricanes and earthquakes that impacted us close to home and around the globe. Our supporters, like you, funded thousands of units to help people who had lost everything. Read on to hear about a few of the projects you helped support this year, and also grab your “Stay” or “Go” Checklist so that you’re prepared when a disaster strikes. We are thrilled to announce our Fall Gift of Light Grantees. We chose these organizations to partner with Unite to Light and receive free Luke Lights and Chandler Chargers to help light the world. Each organization shares an overlapping goal with Unite to Light as they enhance education, improve global health, help in times of disaster and serve people experiencing homelessness. Below is additional information on each organization that was selected in our Fall grant cycle, including their mission and how they will be using Luke Lights or Chandler Chargers in their communities.
We are excited to announce our Spring 2021 Gift of Light Grantees! These organizations were selected from a robust group of applicants and have been selected to receive free Luke Lights and/or Chandler Chargers, as well as partner with Unite to Light through numerous other programs to enhance and amplify our efforts to light the world. Read on for information on each of the seven organizations selected and how they will be using the Lights/Chargers. If you’re interested in applying for our Fall Gift of Light cycle, please apply here before August 31, 2021.
Since the early 2000s, the frequency and severity of natural disasters have significantly increased, largely due to climate change. The United States has experienced numerous billion-dollar disasters each year, with total damages often reaching into the tens of billions. In 2024, the U.S. has already faced 16 billion-dollar disasters, including severe storms, wildfires, and tropical cyclones (NOAA NCEI) (NOAA NCEI) (NOAA). For instance, by May 2024, there were 11 billion-dollar events, totaling over $25 billion in damages and resulting in at least 84 fatalities (NOAA) (FOX Weather).
This rise in natural disasters has underscored the critical importance of disaster preparedness. Thinking ahead about a possible disaster can be unnerving, and knowing where to start with getting supplies can be challenging, but it is crucial in the event of an emergency. Some disasters may require you to evacuate with little to no notice, while others may necessitate sheltering in place. Being prepared for both scenarios is essential, and having the right supplies ready can make a significant difference. Our guide will break down what to pack in a to-go bag for sudden evacuations and how to stock a stay-box for sheltering at home.
