Unite to Light recently hosted our third annual "Unite to Light the Night" art festival and fundraiser at the Community Arts Workshop in Santa Barbara on October 18th and 19th. This vibrant event brought together over 50 artists and performers who used light as either their medium or inspiration, showcasing creativity and innovation in illuminating ways.

Unite to Light, the Santa Barbara-based non-profit, continues its mission to shine a light in the darkest corners of the globe, and in our community! Just when you thought Santa Barbara couldn’t get any brighter, Unite to Light the Night, the organization's flagship fundraising event, is back for a third year, ready to outshine itself. Guests will experience Breathing Space, where your breath becomes one with the planet, by Jonathan Smith, Alan Macy, and Tai Rodrig. Carlos Grasso’s COLORSPACE uses simple changes in light to upend your perception of reality, while Louise Gerber's Colored Shadows will make you rethink the power of a simple shadow. Projection based art is a fairly new art form and is unique in its ability to engage people to actually become the art. Through touch and vision, people or objects can be transformed and transported in ways that delight, awe and inspire. We use this art to become aware of relationships and impacts that might be invisible otherwise.

For the last two years, Unite to Light has hosted an annual light based art exhibition and fundraiser called Unite to Light the Night. The event invites guests to tangibly explore their connections to light and energy, while also building awareness for Unite to Light’s mission, and raising funds to send solar lights and solar power to people living without electricity. Unite to Light chose to do an art show over a typical fundraiser due to art’s ability to portray feelings beyond words. As Nathan Vonk, a partner in the event and owner of Sullivan Goss Gallery, said: “Art can be used to deepen experiences of things that may be otherwise difficult to talk about or understand.” For many of us, it can be impossible to truly conceptualize what it would be like to live without light and electricity. Through partnerships with local artists, Unite to Light hopes to inspire a better understanding of their cause and mission through art.
