EVERY 2 minutes, a woman dies giving Birth
Can you imagine giving birth in the dark? Perhaps you have a candle, kerosene lamp or wood fire, but the hut doesn't have windows and is dark even in the day. The nearest hospital is a day's walk. Your lifeline is a trained midwife, but even her efforts are limited if she cannot see, let alone call for help if needed.
Solar light and power can be particularly impactful for reproductive, maternal and newborn health in parts of the world that do not have access to electricity. In 2016, 78% of live births worldwide benefitted from skilled care during delivery. That number can vary widely depending on location and socioeconomic status. In sub-Saharan Africa in 2016 only 53% of live births had the help of a trained medical provider. One proven method for increasing skilled care at births is by training midwives and village health care professionals.
A typical midwife may assist with 150-200 births per year; some deliver as many as 400 babies a year. As the number of trained midwives increases, the number of mothers who die due to maternity-related issues decreases. Trained midwives save lives.
We seek to provide these medical professionals with solar light and solar power so they can perform their work. Anytime. Anywhere. Because babies come. Anytime. Anywhere.
To expand our impact we joined the UNFPA Safe Birth, Even Here Campaign,
a United Nations Population Fund effort to end maternal deaths in areas affected by humanitarian crisis or fragile situations.
Because every 2 minutes, a woman dies giving birth.
