Only 26 percent of the population of Sierra Leone has access to electricity. The lack of electricity has negative implications for education as it limits the time children can give to their studies. Some children wake up at sunrise to complete their homework, which is not conducive to their learning later in the day. Lack of electricity limits their ability to learn and perform academically. In partnership with the World Food Programme in Sierra Leone, Unite to Light will create Light Libraries in 200 schools so that students can "check out" a solar light to take home and complete their homework after dark. Access to solar lights improves educational outcomes, and "Light Libraries" are an efficient use of funds as many students can share one light.

Santa Barbara City College - Power for unhoused students

5.5% of Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) students are experiencing homelessness, with many of them living outdoors or in vehicles. The challenges associated with unmet basic needs such as homelessness are multifaceted, encompassing societal stigma, hunger, and a diminished sense of personal safety. These difficulties are amplified for students who must also balance their education. Access to renewable power and lighting sources can prove pivotal, enabling students to meet homework deadlines and excel in their exams. In partnership with SBCC, Unite to Light is providing solar-powered Chandler Chargers to SBCC students facing homelessness. This support alleviates one significant burden, empowering them to graduate and thrive.

Fight Back Santa Maria Valley

The Youth and Young Adults Homeless Services program was initially created to assist unhoused and unsheltered individuals aged 18-24 in obtaining housing. FBSMV offers a variety of services to help Transitional Age Youth make the transition to permanent housing, including rapid rehousing, supportive housing, and case management. As of August 2023, this program has served 289 youth. They have successfully housed 74 and secured temporary destinations for 80 young adults. Unite to Light is partnering with FBSMV to provide solar-powered Chandler Chargers to young adults in the Santa Maria Valley who are living without permanent shelter. Providing reliable access to light and power can be one stepping stone to change the trajectory of their future.
